Logging time

Hourly and flat-fee entries, and what happens to the rate.

An entry is either hours times a rate, or a flat amount. Switch between them with the toggle on the Log Time form.

THE RATE IS COPIED, NOT LOOKED UP

When you save an entry, the rate in force at that moment is written onto it. Changing the case rate later leaves the entry alone. Without this, correcting a rate would silently restate every hour you had ever logged on that case — including hours a client has already paid for.

FLAT FEES

A flat entry bills its amount directly. You can also record hours against it for your own records: they count toward your logged-hours totals and your Rule 26 picture, but they never multiply against anything. The invoice shows the amount and no hourly rate, because none was used to arrive at it.

REPEATING AN ENTRY

Repeat creates one real entry per date — not a single merged row. Each day can then be edited or deleted on its own, which is what you need when a trial ran Monday and Tuesday, skipped Wednesday, and resumed Thursday. Series edits only ever touch unbilled entries; a day already invoiced is left exactly as the client saw it.
