Getting started

Setting your rates

Default rates, per-case overrides, and why a $0 rate hides an activity.

Rates live in My Practice. Each activity type gets its own hourly rate, and those become the starting point for every new case.

WHY A NEW CASE DOES NOT FOLLOW YOUR DEFAULTS AFTERWARDS

When you create a case, your current defaults are copied onto it. From that moment the two are independent. Raising your standard rate next year will not reach back and restate work already logged on an older engagement — which is exactly what you want, because that work was performed and in many cases already billed at the old rate.

To change a rate for one engagement only, use the Billing rates card on the case itself.

HIDING AN ACTIVITY YOU DO NOT BILL

Leave a rate blank, or set it to $0, and that activity disappears from the time-entry picker. Nothing is deleted — give it a rate again and it comes straight back. This is how you keep the list short if you never bill, say, Travel separately.

A blank rate and a $0 rate are stored differently. Blank means "not priced yet"; zero means you deliberately do not bill it. Both hide the activity, but the distinction is kept so your intent survives.
